Thieves don’t care about the new low rates of memberships at health clubs, they want your valuables! And why wouldn’t they when you leave them sitting in plain site in your vehicles! Fitness centers and health clubs all over the United States are being hit hard by crime. We commend you for getting out there and making fitness a priority in your life, but be smart about it. So you have your new spandex or low rider running shorts on with that tank top, t shirt, or sports bra with no pockets. You just want to go in and start your workout, no time or money for renting a locker and you don’t want to just leave your stuff on a bench somewhere. We get it, its not easy or practical to keep things safe. But what is more important to you? The 2 minutes it takes to hide your things in your car, out of site, or rent a locker. Or, the days to weeks it takes replacing your phone, canceling your credit cards, finding your car in pieces, buying new navigation systems, stereos, MP3 players, computers, etc.? Tis the season to be stealing! Did you know the two highest crime seasons are Summer and the month of December? Risk verses reward is the lifestyle of a criminal. During these two times of the year, the reward exceeds the risk in the criminal mind. For December, people are frantically all about filling their cars with packages as they move from store to store and plaza to plaza. Parking lots are filled to the max as customers spend at minimum 30 minutes in the store of their choice. All a criminal needs is 30 seconds or less. Moving from one car to the other testing the handles or simply ripping them off the thieves gain access. Finding the proper vehicle to rob can take time which they don’t have. Think like a thief! Would you risk looking in a car that you cannot see items of interest or a car that has bags of new purchases in plain site? Times up!!! You just got robbed. Use your trunk, the under side of your seats, cover items with jackets, use your glove box, or center consoles. Find areas to Hide Your Things. Once you have done that don’t make it easy for a thief to just open your doors. Lock Your Car, take that extra second to hear the honk or beep or turn the key so your car is locked. Many question the image and feeling that the general public or local citizens have towards what is now the most successful auto theft awareness program in the nation. Like Neighborhood Crime Watch, Hide Lock Take does address a sensitive subject for cities with and without high theft. So whose opinion matters most, the citizens or the criminals? HLT staff argues, though signs in itself do address the issue of crime, they do so as an educational tool. Would we tell MADD organization (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) to stay out of our schools because we don’t have a high drunk driver fatality record in our city?
